Custom software development, when no existing product genuinely fits
Custom software is the right answer when a business process is genuinely distinctive, when several systems need to work as one, or when an industry product covers most of the need but not the part that matters most. It is also expensive, so we do not recommend it lightly.
- Analysis and discovery before a single line of code
- A clear recommendation, including when a standard product is better
- Built to integrate with the tools you already use
- Deployed, trained and supported after go-live

We will often tell you not to build custom software
Custom software is slower and more expensive than configuring an existing product, and it carries a maintenance obligation for years. If a product solves eighty percent of your problem and the remaining twenty percent is not strategically important, buying is usually the better decision. We would rather say that early than take the project.
Good reasons to build custom software
These are the situations where building genuinely beats buying.
The process is genuinely distinctive
It is a real competitive advantage, not just a slightly different way of doing a common task.
Several systems need to become one
The integration itself is the product, and no single existing tool covers it.
You have outgrown spreadsheets
The work has become large enough that manual handling is a real cost.
Industry products nearly fit
The gap is small but the part that is missing is the part that matters.
How a custom build runs
A structured process is what stops a custom project becoming an open-ended one.
Discovery
We study the workflow, the users, the constraints and the systems involved.
Design
We specify the data model, the screens and the integrations before building.
Build in stages
We deliver working software early so you can give feedback while it is cheap to change.
Integrate
We connect the new system to the tools that must keep working.
Deploy and train
We implement, migrate data and train the people who will use it.
Support and evolve
We maintain the system and adapt it as the business changes.
Kinds of custom software we deliver
Operational systems
Systems that run a core business process that no product covers adequately.
Integrations
Connecting existing tools so information stops being re-entered.
Reporting and dashboards
Consolidating data from several systems into one honest view.
Customer and staff portals
Purpose-built access for customers, partners or staff.
Mobile and field tools
Applications for people who work away from a desk.
Document and quoting engines
Producing quotations, job sheets and invoices from structured data.
How we help you decide
| Question | If yes | If no |
|---|---|---|
| Does a product already solve most of this well? | Buy and configure it | Building may be justified |
| Is the process central to how you compete? | Custom is worth considering | Buy is usually better |
| Do several systems need to become one? | Custom integration is likely needed | Buy a product with the feature |
| Will you maintain this for years? | Budget for ongoing support | Consider how it will survive long term |
Common questions
How much does custom software cost?
How long does it take?
Who owns the software?
What happens after launch?
Can you extend one of your products instead?
Describe the process no product seems to fit
Tell us what the process does and why the existing tools fall short. We will tell you honestly whether to build, extend or buy.
